Bio: Samuel Coleridge was born on October 21, 1772 in Ottery St. Mary, Devonshire England. Coleridge was a "prodigious reader"(Encyclopedia Britannica) and was known among his classmates for having great memory. He studied at Cambridge for a while, but after losing all his assets to gambling, he enlisted in the army. However, shortly after, his family purchased his discharge. He was a lyrical poet, critic, and philosopher. He wrote Lyrical Ballads with William Wordsworth. He married his wife Sara Fricker unwillingly in 1795, but later fell in love with Wordsworth's sister in law Sara Hutchinson. As time progressed, Coleridge's health got worse and he became addicted to using laudanum and opium. During this tough time he wrote Christabel which is considered as one of Coleridge's "literary achievements". Coleridge worked as an secretary to a governor in hopes to alleviate some of the tension he felt in his life. After some time he separated from his wife and lived with the Wordsworth family. Sara Hutchinson soon broke off her love with Coleridge which led to Coleridge feeling a little resentment of Wordsworth. Coleridge grew depressed and started taking opium. Coleridge continued publishing more works like Biographia Literaria and Encyclopedia Metropolitana. Years later he ended up passing away on July 25, 1834 in Highgate which is located by London.
